Eleanor and Park is gorgeous

IN 1980 white girls were pretty much the only girls. and the only two black girls mentioned have boyfriends. please shut up. the story is nothing about the parents. please shut up

please shut up. this book is the best thing ever, it is sort of racist, however the 1980s WAS HORRIFICALLY RACIST. PLEASE SHUT UP AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD DO YOUR RESEARCH!

please everyone read it. if you don’t like it then, then ok, but I loved it with all my heart

I swear to God if I have to listen to another white whiner about how “awesome” this book is

In fact I’m going to start to copy+paste my previous arguments because how willfully ignorant and repetitive you fucks are is incredible

DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE BACKSTORY WITH HER FAMILY?

Au contraire, I understand what the author was TRYING to do very well. YOU, on the other hand, fail to recognize the mark U.S. colonialism left on its victims, how Korean people were affected as a result of this, and why it is so insulting Park’s mother was written the way she was.

Doing you a favor and linking you to a discussion by ACTUAL KOREAN PEOPLE about why the parents’ backstory is entirely white savior bullshit. It would be like having a victim of the Japanese internment falling in love with a white U.S. soldier.

He was obviously named by HIS AMERICAN FATHER YOU TWAT.

nowhere in the book did it say that. N o w h e r e. I find it too much of a coincidence that “Park” is a common Korean surname and this boy’s name is “Park.”

THIS IS THE FUCKING 1970s you idiot! women were supressed and what ever.

O M F G so you want to defend this book but you can’t even get its timeline correctly, nor do you know how to spell “suppressed” or what you ACTUALLY mean, “oppression”? (I mean usually I don’t take spelling or grammar into account but if you’re gonna try to call me an idiot, well…) Are you saying women aren’t oppressed NOW? The problem is the AUTHOR fetishized the shit out of the Korean characters, the fetishization and sexism was NEVER called out in the book and was written as a GOOD THING.

the ninja thing, he does taekwondo

wow fancy that

WOW ninjas are from JAPAN

WOW TAEKWONDO IS A KOREAN MARTIAL ART

GOOD JOB PROVING MY POINT AND FURTHER HOMOGENIZING ASIANS, JACKASS!!

lol I’M the only one that thinks this way? I think you need to look at the note count on this post. I think you need to check the link I provided you with. Check out KOREAN tumblr users like cielrouge, lostintrafficlights, kceyagi, etc. Check out ASIAN tumblr users such as isanahrunawaybandit, and angrygirlcomics. Because I can PROMISE you ACTUAL ASIAN PEOPLE have made the same criticisms I have about this book.

IN 1980 white girls were pretty much the only girls.

LOLOLOLOLWUT. So then you’re saying the only fucking girls in the 80s were white girls? WoC didn’t pop up until the nineties? WHO built your railroads? WHOM did you intern in during WWII? WHOM did you enslave? WHOSE land did you steal, then proceeded to commit genocide on and enslave their people? (Hint: all these people are in fact POC.) Like, did we suddenly disappear off the face of the earth in the 80s then make a weird comeback in the nineties? hahaha try harder

and the only two black girls mentioned have boyfriends.

please tell me how this solves how blatantly racist their portrayals were. Are you implying black girls by default are undesirable so we should be grateful this racist author decided to give them SOME romance? Wooow.

please shut up. this book is the best thing ever, it is sort of racist, however the 1980s WAS HORRIFICALLY RACIST. PLEASE SHUT UP AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD DO YOUR RESEARCH!

oh look the #1 most common response “THE 80S WERE RACIST!!!”

so here’s my frequent ass response ready:

The book was published A FEW YEARS AGO. The author should’ve known DAMN well this behavior was not okay. We live in a time where gay marriage is outlawed in most places—does that suddenly excuse homophobia, because it’s just common right now? Plenty of people know that’s wrong in this time, and there would be no progress in deflecting racist attitudes if people then hadn’t known it was wrong. So that argument is bullshit.

You can have racist characters to make it believable—people are racist in real life. The problem is this is never ONCE called out or shown to be WRONG once throughout this entire book. Rather Eleanor’s fetishization of Park is GLORIFIED and taken as a compliment. Her racist beliefs are portrayed as FUNNY. Nobody ever says, “You shouldn’t fetishize Koreans” or “That is a misconception of Asians” or “You’re racist.” Her racism is played off as a JOKE or even romanticized. So no, that’s bullshit. And her reducing Park’s mother as a little “china doll” to be “saved”? LOLOL CUZ ISN’T IT ROMANTIC TO DEHUMANIZE HER INTO A FUCKING TOY TO FULFILL THE WHITE SAVIOR’S WET DREAM

Plus by saying “THE 1980S WERE HORRIFICALLY RACIST!!!!!!!!!!” you are implying RACISM DOESN’T EXIST NOW. WHICH IT FUCKING DOES. THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE IS PROOF IN ITSELF.

please everyone read it. if you don’t like it then, then ok, but I loved it with all my heart

wait so you’re telling us it’s okay to dislike it when you literally reblogged this with a TRAIN WRECK of a racist whiney commentary about how I’m in the wrong for legitimately criticizing the racism and fethisization in this book???

do you ever just

fuck that book
